Assignment Number 3! Math! Yay!

Okay.  Each team must answer these five problems:

1.            What is 987+868? 

2.            What is the square root of 3636649?  

3.            4x²+7x=13511135  Solve for x. 

4.            Granny, Barb, Martha, Lisa, Ellie, Erin, Katie, Stephanie, Maisie, Niki, and Charlotte decide to have a family-wide garage sale to raise money to take a girls-only cruise.  They decide to hold the garage sale in Pennsylvania.

Granny packed up the Mothership with Grandpa’s collection of 52 golf balls and his blinking UM hat.  She priced the golf balls at $1.75 each and the blinking UM hat at $30.  Granny spent $90 in gas to get to and from Pennsylvania.

Barb packed up her red convertible with Larry’s vintage garage towel collection.  There were 40 towels, and she priced them at $15 each.  Barb spent $90 in gas and $81 in Snickers bars and black licorice getting to and from Pennsylvania.

Lisa and Ellie packed up the Element with Dave’s stinkiest running shoes.  There were 30 pairs of them.  They priced each pair of shoes at $0.25 per pair and spent $120 on gas. During the trip, Ellie managed to download $52.99 in Warren Miller movies and Warren Zevon songs from iTunes.

Erin and Katie made 30 of their famous cheese balls and rode the train from Washington D.C. to Newtown.  They priced the cheese balls at $10.50 each, but used $6.00 of ingredients for each cheese ball.  Tickets to and from Washington D.C. for both ladies cost a grand total of $50.

Stephanie and Maise packed up Don’s hottest hot sauces in their Pilot, and brought them east.  They spent $100 in gas, and on the way, all of the hot sauces bottles spilled and the hot sauce ate through the floor of the car.  The repairs cost $1014. 

Niki and Charlotte towed the brown 1981 Cadillac Eldorado diesel Corey and Peter bought to restore behind the Big Red Van to Pennsylvania. Niki and Charlotte used $115 worth of gas.  In addition, in order to make better time, Niki paid a mechanic in Ohio $231 to remove the speed governor in the BRV.  Amazingly, the Eldorado hulk was worth $650.

Finally, Martha painted a picture to sell at the garage sale, using the garage door off of 6 Geranium Ct. as the canvas.  It appraised for $1200.  Unfortunately, it cost Doug $750 to have a new garage door hung.

If Granny, Barb, Martha, Lisa, Ellie, Erin, Katie, Stephanie, Maisie, Niki, and Charlotte sold all of their goods for their asking prices, how much did they earn for their cruise, less expenses?
