Niki and I have been talking about the TFR, and we were wondering what you thought about moving the time of year of the TFR.
We remember and appreciate that the TFR was originally planned to be at New Year's so that the family can celebrate Thanksgiving, New Year's, and Christmas together. Unfortunately, my job makes it very difficult to travel at Christmas and New Year's, and we wonder if many of you have the same issues.
What would you think about moving the TFR to either the spring or the middle of the winter (of 2013)? We thought we could schedule it around a 3-day public holiday weekend in February or spring break. We understand that this might mean that kids miss a couple of days of school. Would that be okay with everyone? I know that under the Rochester Adams attendance policy circa 1994 this would work, but that was a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away.
Let's talk about it a little bit, and Niki and I will take a poll later this month. If the Taylor Family does not have an overwhelming desire to change the date, then we will plan the TFR for New Year's 2013.

I have tried posting a comment, but it does not appear as a comment. HELP?
ReplyDeleteNow I have tried twice. Geez, I am really technologically deficient. I will try again later. GrandDad
ReplyDeleteInteresting thought. I think in general we are open to moving the reunion, and if people are stating preferences, we prefer Feb or March vs. something like MLK weekend. But, one of the things that makes New Years work is that no one would ever have competing school issues - like big papers due, sport tournaments, exams coming up, etc. to worry about. While this isn't a big deal now, in just a few TFR's away, the next generation of kids might be facing some of these things. Just something to chew on.....
ReplyDeleteOh, life does get complicated doesn't it! Although there are good reasons for the original date, if one of us can't be there then its a reason to look around. As long as the commitment is there, a lot happens in a three year period to maybe we should expect it to bounce around a lot. I don't know if all schools use the same weekend as President's weekend and yes we are moving into a period where school attendance is more important than the previous years. We'll have a better feeling for the rhythm of exams in the fall. Martha- let's us both see if Spring '13 spring break dates are set in NewTown and TC and see if they over lap. Probably no secret why you see so many family reunions in July and August. I imagine with some chit chat over the next month or so this will be resolved. The TC Taylors
ReplyDeleteBarb and Larry are flexible and willing to go along with "the plan" - we have no problems switching to a fall or spring date. My only suggestion is that whatever time we set - we stick to that date as we move forward - i.e. - try not to name a new date every 3rd year - I think in the long run as our family expands - if we can all count on a specific date we are more likely to be able to plan on that date on our future calendars. (Would it be easier to have our school family members just take a Friday off rather than try to hit spring vacations - wouldn't that change from district to district??) G&G are in Florida Feb and March so perhaps those months are not good.... Perhaps Fall is a better time to think of?? Food for thought from Rochester... Bjs
ReplyDeleteFollow up from the TC Taylors. Fall and Spring will not be good for the TC Taylors, at least for the next 4 years, as 2/3 of the family will have meets every Saturdays in April/May, Sept./October. 2nd weekend in November, beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIf we're striking out months, January doesn't work for the Sandersons. So, I think that means we're looking at Nov-Dec and June-Aug? How about first weekend of August? I totally agree with Mom's POV that we need to try to stick to a date, if at all possible, so we're not negotiating dates/months every three years.
ReplyDeleteWOW, we are a busy bunch! Early August is probably great for the PA Taylors-- after Jolli Lodge, high school hasn't yet started. Just have to make sure there isn't a big dental show at that time. This gets close to Dream Cruise, but something that can be missed once every three years?
ReplyDeleteYikes - so many scheduling issues. This is still a year or so away and we all have time to plan our work/play schedules if we know that we are committed for a certain date.
ReplyDeleteSummer sounds good but keep in mind it is almost impossible to find a house rental for a weekend in the summer. Perhaps we will have to go to a State park like we did for the reunion if we want the reunion date to be in the summer.
Dream Cruise is not a big deal to plan around - we just do that for fun if we are free otherwise.
Dickinson/Wright just sold their building and are moving so there will be no more Dream Cruise parties.

Thank you everybody for your comments. It sounds like New Years is really the best time for this. I'm glad everybody chimed in - we'll move forward with New Years 2012/2013!

I just noticed the email from last January saying that the first clue will involve Trig. I'll tell Ellie to study hard. Dave
ReplyDeleteJust looking at the old videos. It doesn't feel like we've been doing this all that long but if my math (or Trig) is correct, looks like CJ will be about the same age as Ellie was during the first TFR, or Ellie will be about the same age as Katie was in Ohio. Not sure where that leaves me!? Dave ( no answers required!)
ReplyDeleteYes bring on the first clue! Charlotte as old as Ellie was in Hocking Hills... where does the time go!?!?
ReplyDeleteI still recall Ellie's comment at the first TFR about what I will be when I grow up. That wasn't really so long ago; I have not grown up yet.
